Deserts are mysterious and sometimes deadly places to traverse, with heat and lack of water combining to kill the unwary. This supplement has 100 different encounters that a GameMaster can use to liven up a desert journey, or perhaps make it even more dangerous.
Some are interesting, some may lead to new places and some will be harmful to the unwary. The different encounters have been strongly influenced by Ancient Egypt, with lost pharaohs and hidden tombs, with an element of Arabia, but are suitable more most fantasy desert.
To use the list, either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.
Here are some sample results:
43. A wooden pole partially buried in the sand is actually a 10’ tall standard, topped with a wooden falcon that still bears a few traces of gold leaf. The standard can be identified as belonging to a military force that disappeared centuries ago (a Normal Lore (History) skill roll to confirm).
44. A yipping cry during the night is followed by a squeal of pain, quickly silenced, as a desert cheetah catches its prey. If the sound is not tracked down, the next day bones and bits of flesh are being fed on by vultures.
45. Before the characters, a sinkhole suddenly opens up in the desert. The sinkhole rapidly widens and if characters or animals are not quick enough (an Easy Athletics skill roll) to move away from the edge they will be dumped into a limestone cave 30’ below the surface.
