D6: The Strange Rumours – Recursions: Atom Nocturne

WorldsThe Strange is a game published by Monte Cook Games. It is, at least in part, set in the normal world, but there are other worlds out there, in the Strange. This list has six rumours for that setting, similar to the various different adventure hooks in the books, and these can be used as adventure hooks or simple misinformation.

  1. Fallen have always been a by-product of the psychic abilities that permeate Atom Nocturne, those who are unable to cope with the heights of their abilities. It’s rumoured that the number of Fallen being created, at least as a percentage of the population, has been steadily rising, suggesting that more and more people are not able to cape with psychic gifts.
  2. Lesser Fallen on Atom Nocturne are caught and they have their psychosis treated in a special floating citadel called Maximum Sanctum. Though the citadel is supposed to be very secure, it’s rumoured that this security is not as thorough as is made out, and that some Fallen have managed to escape over the years.
  3. Some of those of Atom Nocturne have their minds collapse inward as they are unable to manage the heights of psychic ability. These are called the Fallen and seek personal gain above everything else. There are rumours, though, that some of the Fallen have managed to start cooperating with each other, realising they can gain more by working together, however brief that might be, than acting on their own.
  4. Talents on Atom Nocturne are capable of dealing with those known as the Fallen, who seek personal gain above everything else. However, some of the Talents have been disappearing recently and there’s a concern that the Fallen may be seeking to deliberately eliminate the biggest threats to them.
  5. The Splendor Dome in Atom Nocturne is where champions fight using their Talents, in competitions that are not meant to be lethal, and killing an opponent is an automatic disqualification from competing again. It’s rumoured, though, that sometimes others rig the fights to ensure that a rival either accidentally kills a competitor, or is killed by them.
  6. Winners of the competitions at the Splendor Dome in Atom Nocturne may receive an artefact crafted from the psychic energy of the crowd, if the crowd approves. It’s rumoured that sometimes artefacts that should be created are not, and vice versa, as the crowd can on occasion be manipulated in their approval.

D10: The Strange Rumours – The Strange: Locations in the Strange

WorldsThe Strange is a game published by Monte Cook Games. It is, at least in part, set in the normal world, but there are other worlds out there, in the Strange. This list has ten rumours for that setting, similar to the various different adventure hooks in the books, and these can be used as adventure hooks or simple misinformation.

  1. Baldran’s Maw in the Strange is a dangerous nexus whose flexing fundament can crush a traveller in moments. Those who venture to the centre of the Maw have the opportunity to try and invest a reality seed, but there are rumours that sometimes seeds invested at Baldran’s Maw turn out in unexpected and unplanned ways.
  2. Brachistochrone dust can often be found in Baldran’s Maw, which is one of the reasons why travellers visit such a dangerous nexus. Some say that the dust from the Maw is different to that found in other parts of the Strange, but so far no-one has been able to confirm this.
  3. Five chambers are set aside for investiture in the Orb of Worlds for those who come to the Orb with a reality seed. Naturally, given how rare reality seeds are, most of the investiture chambers spend their time empty. There are rumours that, on occasion, all five chambers have been used, and all by the same part, which some claim is the Order of the Orb itself, using reality seeds for their own purposes.
  4. Nexuses are where the fractal energy waves of the Strange naturally meet and reinforce each other. Such locations are valuable to those who know how to channel their energy, and though only three have been catalogued by Ruk explorers, many more are believed to exist. It’s rumoured that expeditions have been dispatched by Ruk factions in order to locate more of these nexuses and, presumably, utilise them.
  5. Radical organisations out of Ruk have attempted to take over control of the Orb of Worlds in the Strange on more than one occasion, only to be prevented by the Order of the Orb. It’s rumoured that one of the factions has decided to use a stealthier approach; instead of anything overt, they are gradually infiltrating members into the Order to slowly take control of the Orb from within.
  6. Rive-shamash is one of the most proficient battle teachers of the Order of the Orb on the Orb of Worlds. There are rumours that she checks out those who visit the Orb very carefully, with some saying that if she doesn’t approve of them in some way, the Order will not permit the visitor to stay.
  7. The interior of the Kray Nebula is crawling with kray of all kinds, as well as eggs that are as yet unhatched and larvae. Recently, there have been rumours of kray eggs being found drifting through the Strange in large numbers, all apparently originating from the Nebula, and seemingly being dispersed in quantity from it.
  8. The Kray Nebula is a nexus in the Strange that most with any sense would stay clear of, given that it is home to the kray. And yet, there are rumours that travellers have been seen travelling to the Nebula from Ardeyn and, perhaps worryingly, returning safely again afterwards.
  9. The Nexus of Baldran’s Maw is a great beacon that can be seen from hours away due to its glow, and the vibration from the vibrating fundament inside it is also transmitted through the Strange as a groaning raw that can be heard a day away. Some say that both of these properties of the Maw will sometimes act as a lure, drawing travellers to the Maw where they can be crushed inside it.
  10. The Orb of Worlds is a nexus in the Strange that is guarded by an order of monk-like caretakers originally hailing from Earth. The Order of the Orb has prevented the Orb from being infested by dangerous creatures, though some claim the Order itself has been subverted by parasitic organisms that know control its members for their own purposes.

D10: The Strange Rumours – The Estate

WorldsThe Strange is a game published by Monte Cook Games. It is, at least in part, set in the normal world, but there are other worlds out there, in the Strange. This list has ten rumours for that setting, similar to the various different adventure hooks in the books, and these can be used as adventure hooks or simple misinformation.

  1. Holding on the Estate’s campuses is a facility with a variety of different cells where individuals who are dangerous, for one reason or another and including operatives who have been adversely affected, are safely kept. Though escaping from Holding is difficult to say the least, it’s said that a number of individuals have managed to do so over the years.
  2. The Armoury on the Estate’s campus is, naturally, where weapons are kept. Most of the weapons are fairly normal, but there are some unusual ones. There are also said to be weapons that haven’t been properly figured out yet; not dangerous enough for the Vault, but still even more dangerous than a weapon normally is.
  3. The Estate gathers many hard to find, and often expensive, books and documents on recursions in its campus library, material that predates the internet. The organisation is always looking out for more, but there are rumours that it has been sniped a number of times recently at auctions, both online and off, by purchasers outbidding the Estate’s agents at the last minute.
  4. The Estate has been having problems with the September Project recently as the organisation’s spies inside the project have been disappearing and dying. It’s also rumoured that the Project has managed to slip a few infiltrators inside the Estate’s own campus. Though these have been caught, there are worries that some operatives may have slipped through the net.
  5. The Estate keeps an eye on recursion miners that aren’t affiliated with other groups. Some recursion miners never call attention to themselves, but more often than not most do something that does call attention to them. It’s rumoured that the number of recursion miners who have been drawing attention to themselves has declined, and it’s unlikely this is because that the number doing attention-drawing activities has also declined. It could be that someone is making sure they don’t appear on the Estate’s radar.
  6. The Estate pays out Morrison Fellowship Prizes to people working in any field who demonstrate remarkable talent. The prizes are used as a reason to investigate strange events to make sure they are what they are supposed to be, and as a recruitment vehicle, but it’s rumoured that a few recent investigations have gone sour, with Estate field teams being attacked, and some are wondering if one of the Estate’s adversaries is using the prizes as a cover of their own to lure field teams into the open.
  7. The Gate House on the Estate’s campus is covered by strict security and contains several permanent recursion gates, most of which require a key or password to operate. Despite this security, there are rumours that some of the recursion gates have still been used without permission, though it’s uncertain how such could be proven to have happened.
  8. The Recursion Lab is where the Estate studies recursion gates and related topics, including how to seal recursion gates both quickly and permanently. It’s rumoured that one of the last attempts to do so involved a technique never before used, and that the outcome of this was unexpected, and not in a good way.
  9. The Vault on the Estate campus is where items are stored such as artefacts from other recursions brought through inapposite gates and items that translate whilst still remaining incredibly dangerous. It’s said there’s a secret part of the Vault, deep below the ground, where the really dangerous things are kept. Given what’s normally stored in the Vault, such would be items of unbelievable danger.
  10. The Visitor’s Centre at the Estate’s headquarters is where members of the public can learn about the Morrison Fellowship Prize. The centre is located off the main campus and is staffed by people who don’t know anything about the true purpose of the Estate. Staff in the know do still keep an eye on the place and there are rumours that a number of visitors recently seem to know too much about the real purpose of the Estate, inferring from questions they’ve asked.

D10: Numenera Rumours – Ancuan

Numenera Cover
TM and © 2019 Monte Cook Games, LLC.

Numenera is a game published by Monte Cook Games. Its setting is the Ninth World, and this list has ten rumours for that setting. The rumours, which are similar to the Hearsay that can be found in the official books, can be used as adventure hooks or as simple misinformation.

  1. Captain Jamson “The Liar” Connell is a retired member of the Redfleet who can often be found in Kaparin in Ancuan. It’s rumoured that Connell once killed and ate his entire crew, and his attempts to eat those who threaten him don’t exactly put a lie to this. There are rumours that a number of people have disappeared in town, with all that is found of them, if anything, being some chewed bones. Some believe that Connell is hunting and eating people.
  2. In Pike’s Head is an unusual structure that juts up out of the water, known simple as “the Beast”. The structure is clearly organic, and is said to resemble a pike’s head, but it doesn’t appear to be a corpse for it doesn’t seem to rot. If it doesn’t rot, then maybe it’s not dead and, recently, there are rumours that some of the village’s residents have seen the Beast move ever so slightly.
  3. Ishlav in Ancuan was rebuilt after an accident with a strange device destroyed all non-living matter, but not the ground, within 2 miles. Living creatures caught in the blast did, however, benefit from improved health, and this improved health seems to have been passed on to later generations. There are rumours, though, that there’s a dark side to this improved health. That, occasionally, individuals are transformed into something monstrous over time.
  4. Kaparin in Ancuan is home to the Redfleets Museum, where the members of the Redfleets display items in what is a combination museum, library and hall of fame. There are interesting items on display, but it’s also rumoured at least some, and no-one seems to know which ones, are actively dangerous. Some visitors to the museum are said to have disappeared without a trace.
  5. Rarrow in Ancuan is a city with two parts. The second part, Hidden Rarrow, is built on the other side of an interstitial rift. It’s not known where Hidden Rarrow exists; some believe that it is in the future of the world, others that it’s in a parallel universe. Recently, there are rumours of the inhabitants of Hidden Rarrow encountering strange things roaming their city at night. The things haven’t shown themselves to be hostile – at least, not yet – but nor is it known just what they are.
  6. Sallian Orsay the Red, the seemingly ageless ruler of Kaparin in Ancuan and one of the founders of the Redfleets, is protected by a seemingly endless army of goons willing to fight for her. There have long been rumours that Sallian’s agelessness comes from something she discovered on one of her missions, but it’s also rumoured that the goons come from something else. That they aren’t human, or even technically alive, and that Sallian has a numenera device that produces endless replicas for her.
  7. The inhabitants of Glavis in Ancuan worship sibling deities called Relia and Bianes. Offerings disappear from the deities’ altars, so most, including those who don’t believe that Relia and Bianes are gods, do believe that there is someone at the very least masquerading as them. There’s a rumour that someone was determined to prove that Relia and Bianes, whilst they exist, are frauds and not true gods. It’s said the individual disappeared and hasn’t been seen since.
  8. The Monks of Mitos are an organisation in Ishlav in Ancuan founded by a man called Kollos. The monks are known for their effective fighting style, seemingly developed by Kollos, and the organisation preaches a message about creating a safer, more harmonious world. There are rumours, though, that the monks are infiltrating Ishlav at every level, both criminal and not, with the aim of gaining complete control over the city and, perhaps, beyond.
  9. The Redfleets are sailors based out of Kaparin an Ancuan, ranging from scientists to thieves, who seek out natural treasures to bring back to their city. There are rumours that some of the Redfleets have been staying out far longer than is possible without returning somewhere for resupply, yet they haven’t been seen anywhere. This has led to speculation that the Redfleets have found and colonised other land somewhere.
  10. There have apparently been a number of outbreaks of strange diseases in Glavis in Ancuan. Each outbreak has infected a number of people, before suddenly burning out and anyone who didn’t die from the infection has been cured. It’s not clear what’s happening, but most think this can’t be a natural occurrence, not for so many different diseases to break out and for them to then be cured.
