100 Shadow Names (And Their Meanings)

100 Shadow Names (And Their Meanings)One of the first things a mage is urged to do when they are inducted into their community is to create a persona for themselves. This persona takes many forms, but the most essential aspect of it is the taking of a new name, called a shadow name.

The following are suggested shadow names that a mage might consider, along with the types of mages who might be drawn to them. However, as with any other decision one of the awakened might make, a mage should carefully consider their choice. After all, one cannot call themselves Nuada for long and expect to keep both their hands.

Here are some sample results:

15. Ushas: A Hindu goddess of the dawn, Ushas represents the new beginning of every day. It is only with her revelation that the darkness of the night, and the spirits that dwell in that night, are chased from the world so that the beings of the day may awaken to tend to their duties. Those who seek fresh starts, or who wish to become agents of fate, may find that this name fits them once they try it on. Dawns come in cycles, though, and no day can reign eternal, which is why it is equally important for a mage to understand that there is a time and a place for everything.

16. Thrym: A great king of giants in the myths of the Norsemen, Thrym was a master of magics, and a potent foe for one to have. One of the few who managed to steal Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, Thrym used it to blackmail the Aesir into giving him a bride. He was undone by his own scheme when the bride turned out to be Thor in disguise, as the god of thunder reclaimed his hammer and slew every giant in the hall. Thrym’s name teaches a lesson that every mage should take to heart; always check a gift to be sure it’s what you were promised.

17. Deimos: One of the two sons of Ares, Deimos drove his father’s chariot alongside his brother Phobos. A god of terror, Deimos was fierce and frightening to those who saw him. This name might appeal to mages who wish to conceal their power until the time to strike has drawn nigh. However, it is also a name that might mask one’s own dread, hiding their true feelings behind a visage of a god of war. In either case, though, it’s important to remember that masks must be laid aside from time to time, lest you forget the true face beneath them.
