100 Unusual Things To Find At A Goblin Market

100 Unusual Things To Find At A Goblin MarketMyths and legends are replete with tales of strange markets and hidden enclaves where creatures from another world come out to do their deals. These stories, though told by dozens of different cultures from around the world, are glimpses of the alien gatherings of inhuman creatures known as goblin markets.

These markets deal in the bizarre and magical plants one can harvest from the Hedge, items woven by the enchanted songs and whipstitch fingers of fae craftsman, information, secrets and a thousand things besides. It can be difficult to make a goblin market seem truly bizarre, however… which is where this supplement comes in!

The following entries are unusual things to find in a goblin market. From parts and pieces of legendary creatures, to obscure emotions barely named in the mortal world, to idioms made material, the following items are meant to add flavor to your markets, and to give your players a sense that they really are exploring a place beyond the ken of mortals.

To use the list, either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.

Here are some sample results:

64. This merchant stall has a tall pegboard making up the entirety of the back wall, and it’s hung with masks of every sort. There are carved masks with slits for eyes and bloody teeth, masks made of buttery smooth leather that feel almost like living human skin and even scrimshaw masks made from terrible bones that were polished until they gleam. The merchant, a long-limbed creature wearing a mask that seems to flit between comedy and tragedy from one moment to another, believes that everyone should try to find their true face by stepping beneath their canopy and seeing which of these selves call to them.

65. A small cafe with tables and chairs that grow from the floor of the Hedge itself sits along one end of the market. An elongated figure in an immaculate apron waits for patrons, a white towel folded over its forearm. Those who sit are asked what they would like today, and the menu is as deep as their memories. From tarts that taste like a childhood birthday party, to coffee that warms the heart like a first date that went just right, or even a quiche with the complicated flavors of an estranged friendship, anything can be prepared if one describes it. The small, unnamed cafe claims to be the only place in all the Hedge that allows one to truly eat their feelings.

66. A newsstand takes up the back corner of this goblin market, offering bizarre broadsheets and macabre magazines. The Daily Orb purports to have articles about the future, and though the predictions are generally unreliable there’s always at least a thread of truth in them. Phantasma discusses the latest happenings and trends in dreams, and it’s supposedly a popular publication among oneiromancers. The Other Side discusses the fractured truths (or untruths) of the mirror world, and it’s written backwards so that one needs to either have a unique eye or a hand mirror in order to interpret what’s printed on the page.
