This is a selection of different things for a GameMaster to use to add a creepy atmosphere in a futuristic setting. The various different items listed are designed for the horror genre, with some suitable for the modern period though most will require at least a cyberpunk setting and many a futuristic one, especially one with spaceships, but some could be used to simply make a location creepier, even in a game that is not specifically of the horror genre. Some of them are most suited to an urban area, others for the countryside, whilst some can be used in any location.
The various items listed may or may not have an effect on characters – whether or not they do have a direct effect is up to the GM, as is what that effect might be. Some of the results may suggest a supernatural or otherworldly source of menace, others may simply represent a purely human level of horror whilst it’s possible that any horrific impression is given by simply misinterpreting a more everyday occurrence. The GM may wish to encourage such misinterpretations made by the characters in order to make them more nervous, or to distract them from what they really should be paying attention to. More than a few results could easily have a negative consequence; witnessing some of them could shake a character’s mind, even if it’s from a misinterpretation.
To use the list, either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.
Here are some sample results:
39. From a device that looks to be intended to pump fluids around, something which can easily be confirmed by checking the pipes that lead into and out of it, comes a sound like that of multiple heartbeats, rather than something mechanical. If the device is opened up to see how it’s working, it’s seen that inside it are a number of hearts which have been connected up to the pipes, replacing whatever mechanical pumps were there before. The incoming pipes have been split into many smaller tubes, that feed into the hearts, and the outgoing pipes all combine after leaving the hearts.
40. Growths have erupted from the seats where personnel are still sitting. These growths have penetrated their bodies in multiple places, plunging in and then out again. It now looks to be impossible to safely remove the people from their seats, so intertwined are they with them. Going by the expressions on their faces, those in the seats are still alive and able to feel, but large growths have entered their mouths, rendering them unable to speak or even scream.
41. Holograms pop into existence from various holographic projectors. None of them are remotely normal, and many of them are outright disturbing. The holograms depict scenes of violence, in realistic levels of detail, or horrific-looking faces of unknown creatures that appear to be staring at those viewing them. Even when a hologram is supposedly just designed to show things such as displays and data, this will still be replaced by the horrific images, and these come on without any activation of the projectors by users.
