100 Strange or Unusual Encounters for Fantasy Cities II

100 Strange or Unusual Encounters for Fantasy CitiesDungeons and wilderness areas are not the only places where characters can have adventures; cities and other urban areas are another possible location. Cities do not have to be merely the place that characters stop to rest, recuperate and resupply between adventures, as they can be the location of a different type of adventure. Adventuring in a city can pose different restraints on characters, as violence and destruction tend to be frowned on by the authorities.

This is a list of 100 different encounters that characters can have in a city. They can be used simply as background colour and flavour, but most have oddities that can be developed further, making them into a source of potential adventure hooks, should the characters get involved.

To use the list, either roll d100 for a random result, although choosing results manually may be better.

Here are some sample results:

92. The proprietor of a sledge maker is having a problem inside his shop. A feral cat sneaked into the shop overnight and has made itself at home; the cat refuses to
be moved. Neither the owner nor his staff have managed to extricate the cat from where it is encamped within the stock, and several of them are already bearing
scratches. Passers-by generally consider the situation to be amusing, but one of the shop’s customers has already been driven away by the cat.

93. There is what appears to be a protest outside a trading post that is an official merchant for another nation’s goods. The protest appears to be peaceful, and most
of the people attending it are in priestly robes. They are protesting the other nation’s use of slaves, especially to make the goods sold at the trader, and wish to
encourage citizens of the city to boycott anything sold there. Unbeknownst to the priests, one of the attendees is a traitor who has been paid by the nation being
protested to stir up trouble. He plans to get the protest to deteriorate into violence, thereby undermining its peaceful message.

94. The skies above a cartographer’s shop suddenly start to turn dark and swirl. Clouds form, tinged with a bloody hue, and their swirling column reaches high up into
the atmosphere. What appear to be birds are flying around the upper reaches of the swirling column, but given their distance it’s clear that the birds must be something much, much larger than any normal bird for them to be visible. Spears of blood-red lightning illuminate the interior of the clouds and what appears to be blood starts raining from them. The sight is extremely disturbing, but it also happens to be an illusion. Inside the shop, the cartographer has just opened a rather odd map, reputedly of Hell, that he has just received, and the map is cursed in some way to give an appearance of a hellish realm to its surrounding when opened.
