100 Whispers and Rumors For Silkgift, The City of Sails!

100 Whispers and Rumors For Silkgift, The City of Sails!Silkgift is a city with a reputation. Originally little more than a collection of villages, it was transformed by guilds, goods and the ingenuity of a dwarven woman named Clever Elsie. These days, Silkgift is a city known for its creativity in both artistic and alchemical endeavors, and it’s rumored that no matter how outlandish or impossible a proposition is, there’s at least one half-mad engineer in the City of Sails who can make it happen.

Though Silkgift is renowned for how well it cares for its citizens, and its high ideals of education and invention, it is still a city. And like any city, Silkgift has a thousand things happening every hour of every day. From whispers about what kinds of goods (or services) are available along the Archer Canal, to what kinds of everyday miracles are being built in the Ingeneurium, to who is pulling the political strings to shift the direction the City of Sails is going in, you can hear all kinds of strange things if you learn how to just sit and listen.

The rumors included in this supplement are meant to fill out adventures that take place in Silkgift. However, which rumors are true, and which ones are false, is entirely up to the Game Master. The same is true regarding whether these rumors are simply used to organically fill out the background during your campaign, or whether they’re the jumping off point for your next adventure… so choose carefully!

Here are some sample results:

17. Dredgers have been trawling through both Harbours, clearing out debris and ensuring water flows freely. Such activity isn’t usually remarkable, but there are rumors the crews have encountered something that’s left them shaken. Some say it was a blockage that turned out to be a glut of corpses weighed down with chains, while others claim it was a trove of pestilence jars that had been left undisturbed for years, and one or two old timers have weighed in with tales of monstrous creatures the diggers could have awoken from deep sleep. No one knows what’s happening, of course, but the district is certainly trying to shovel speculation into the gaps left by a lack of facts.

18. There has been some public discussion regarding a project to install lightning rods all throughout the Harbours as a method of keeping citizens (as well as ships in port) safe. While this seems like a sensible proposal on its face, there are some who believe there is an ulterior motive behind this initiative. Perhaps the wildest rumor is that the ingeneurs are attempting to capture the energy of lightning strikes in order to use the bolts to power some kind of arcane engine. Even though most don’t believe that’s the case, there have been questions regarding the unusual design of the lightning rods, and why there are so many strange sigils engraved into them.

19. If you pull up a bench and listen to the old hands who’ve since retired from the water in Small Harbour, you’re sure to hear your share of big fish stories. They’ll talk about everything from Jenny Glimmer, a silver fish with a rainbow tail who led lost ships to safe ports, to Black Bishop, a shark rumored to be possessed by the soul of a vicious pirate captain it once devoured. Which of these tales are true, and which are false, is hard to say. Still, the old salts will argue about it for hours on end all the same.
