This is a collection of 100 different islands that characters could encounter whilst travelling. They are most suited to a fantasy setting but some could be used in others. Most of the islands lack specific sizes; although they are generally assumed to be encountered at sea some could be dropped into other locations, such as lakes.
Many of the islands have oddities and peculiarities that may look important, but are not unless the GameMaster decides otherwise. Some are potentially hostile places to visit; others less so.
To use the list either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.
Here are some sample results:
41. From a distance, this island appears to have a strange reddish hue. This continues as it is approached, but it is only when the island is visited that its true strangeness becomes apparent. To creatures on the island, the vegetation does not merely have a reddish hue, it is red, in many different, but dark, shades. Redness permeates the entire island, for the sky is red, not blue, and the clouds are also red-infused. The sun is a glowering red ball, larger than normal and not as illuminating, and even the ground is tinged with red from the sun. No animals or birds can be seen or heard, but there are a number of larger than normal, and odd-looking, red insects.
42. All the flora and fauna on this island is brightly coloured, with vivid, vibrant hues. The place looks pleasant, if potentially headache-inducing from the overpowering colours, but absolutely everything is poisonous. Plants are poisonous if eaten or touched, all the fauna has either venomous bites, stings or otherwise, or is poisonous to eat. Even the ground itself is filled with
poison, and touching it with bare skin will gradually blister and then poison the creature doing so. The sheer amount of poison on the island makes the air slightly toxic to breathe, given that there are tiny fragments of poisonous flora and fauna floating in it, and prolonged exposure to this will poison a creature.
43. When this otherwise ordinary island has been on for a while, the ground will start to shake and large fissures appear in it. These fissures will divide the island into small pieces, each a few dozen yards across at most, and the pieces will move apart from each other, separated by several yards of water. The plant life beyond grass will not be damaged, as each plant will be on a single piece of ground; only the grass will be torn apart. Several hours after the island has fragmented, the ground will shake again, and the separate pieces will move together again, reforming the island into a single mass once more. It will remain like this long enough for grass to grow over the joins again.
