Deserts can be sources of mystery. They may be home to strange civilisations, perhaps long-lost or perhaps still around after millennia. They can also be places of danger.
This supplement has 100 different encounters for a fantasy desert, with much inspiration taken from portrayals of Egyptian and Arabic deserts. There are places, people, creatures and things to encounter. Some may be potentially dangerous and other potentially beneficial. They can be used as a source of background colour or potential adventure hooks.
The supplement also comes in a system neutral version. You do not need both versions.
To use the list, either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.
Here are some sample results:
35. As a dune is descended, the sand starts to suddenly shift underfoot. The entire side of the dune starts to collapse, and any creature on it risks being sent to the bottom and buried under tonnes of sand (treat as an Avalanche from Mountain Terrain in Chapter 13 of the Core Rulebook).
36. A sand dune in the distance looks oddly regular in shape. When it is approached it can be seen that the sand is covering a roughly rectangular limestone outcropping, 50’ by 500’ long and 100’ deep. Carved into the side of the outcropping are four 30’ animal-headed humanoid figures; an ibis, a cat, a hippo and a hawk. Between two of the figures is a rectangular opening, almost as tall as them, leading into the interior of the outcropping. The opening has been mostly filled with sand.
37. A series of regular stone cairns mark a circle in the desert 100’ across. Each cairn is 2’ high and made from stones of a similar size and shape. The stones are not of a type of rock that can be found in the area, the nearest region where it can be found being several hundred miles away (DC 15 Knowledge (geography) to confirm this).
