Pirates are popular encounters, especially in settings that spend any amount of time at sea. Characters may be hired to hunt pirates own to stop their depredations, they may become the victims of pirates themselves or perhaps they could simply encounter pirates in a dockside tavern.
This supplement provides 100 different pirates that can be encountered. Each is given a name and some details on them; the pirates range from captains of their own ships to ones of far lesser stature.
Pirates can be selected randomly by rolling d100 but a GM is advised to pick suitable ones manually.
Here are some sample results:
41. Sae Song, The Crossbones Wife: This elegant half-elf has the bearing of a queen, but in another life she was a common whore. A favorite of the infamous Captain Grayson Riptide, she was his lover, and in time became his sea wife. When Riptide was killed, she stepped into his place, and led his ship to a bloody victory. Now she commands a fleet of dozens of vessels, though she has taken no other husband but the black flag since Grayson slipped beneath the waves.
42. Doldrun Smollett: A halfling with a friendly demeanor and a large crow on his shoulder, Smollett hires himself onto merchant vessels, learns their route, then sends Croaker off to bring the rest of the crew to pluck the bounty. It’s good luck to have a halfling on board, or so many crews believe, so he rarely has trouble planting the seeds for this particular scheme.
43. Starnam Vale: An old man in a tattered robe with a ratty beard, this mostly mad scholar has been a key advisor to many pirate captains over the years. Found marooned on an island in the Gulf of Treason, clutching a black pearl the size of a man’s heart, he often seems like little more than a scatter-brained dotard. When his attention is focused, though, he speaks with the certainty of a coming doom that all would do well to heed. Able to sniff out traps, predict storms and to locate buried treasures, those who treat him well find the stars are often in their favor.
