Fantasy dwarves have undergone a great deal of invention and change since they burst onto the scene with the archetype made infamous by Mr. Tolkien. Though we’ve expanded them from the stereotype of brusque, bearded highlanders who dig deep for ore and sneer at elves, it can sometimes be difficult to really get the gears turning on the various clans of these creatures in your particular setting.
That is where this supplement comes in!
The ten dwarven clans in this book cover an array of specialties, and each comes with their own history, reputation, NPCs and even rumors to use as quest hooks if you’re so inclined. Whether you want to use these clans to flesh out the history and background of your world, you want them directly involved in your current plot or you want to use them as a player to help you create a richer, fuller backstory for your own dwarven character, you can do so!
As always, remember that while stereotypes and reputations for these clans exist for a reason, there’s going to be variations within them. You may find a Cragg who has the heart of a poet despite their training as a soldier, a Stonehand who yearns to make history rather than just read about it in the library or a Quill who would rather do absolutely anything other than oversee the tedious filings and requests of a permit house. Every family has their black sheep, and these clans should be no different.
Lastly, it’s important to remember that many clans may adopt those they consider part of their families. So it might be highly unusual, but not entirely unheard of, for non-dwarves to be acknowledged members of the following clans, as well.
