Dragons are some of the most iconic, and most dangerous, of creatures to face in a fantasy roleplaying game. And as we all know, dragons have hoards. Whether they’re vaults of gold taken from the dwarven king who once held this mountain, gems and crystals dug from the walls of its lair, or merely the treasures of those who came to slay the dragon and failed in the attempt, the size and potency of a hoard speaks volumes of the dragon who holds it.
So if you are planning on putting your players up against a chromatic dragon, consider some of these unique items to add to its hoard! Some of them are merely pieces of set decoration, some are useful items and others are clues to a deeper story the wyrm may be in no state to tell by the time your players find what it was keeping in its cavern. Alternatively, these might represent rewards given to a party who acts on a dragon’s behalf, or parts of your plot they have to steal if they don’t want to face the dragon in open battle.
In the end, the final decision for how you use these treasures is up to you!
Here are some sample results:
6. There are three blue-shelled eggs carefully nestled in an alcove, each of which is roughly the size of a drinking cask. The eggs sit on top of a nest of electrically-charged quartz, which cause sparks to dance across their surface every few moments. Removing the eggs is a dangerous endeavor, both for the thief, but also for whatever creature is incubating inside those lapis lazuli shells. They aren’t dragons, that’s for certain, but what they are isn’t obvious at a glance.
7. An ironshod staff has been placed in a narrow hole in the ground. The staff vibrates when one comes close, and those who grab it can hear a voice speaking to them. The spirit of the staff’s previous owner, an aging scholar named Mardeth Sterne, is bound within the grain of the wood. Able to offer his counsel and experience to those who earn his respect, he wants the staff (and his spirit) returned to his mystical order. Whether he wishes to move onto the other side, or he wants his fellow sages to attempt to resurrect him, is a subject he will not speak on.
8. A series of crystal bottles sit atop a shelf carved into one wall of the lair. The largest is roughly the size of a wine bottle, and the smallest is barely bigger than a shot glass. The bottles sweat condensation, and those who look closely can see clouds inside, with lights flashing within the mist. The dragon appears to have caught lightning in a bottle, and if one were to throw these bottles they would likely explode with destructive force. The bottles should be treated like the beads on a necklace of fireballs, with the only difference being the bottles must be thrown separately, and the impacts deal electricity damage rather than fire damage.
