100 Gateways to the Dreaming

100 Gateways to the Dreaming

100 Gateways to the DreamingChangelings can gain access to the Dreaming in different places and by different ways, some easier, or safer, than others.

This supplement has descriptions of 100 different gateways that could be used, including what might need doing to activate them and what the trod on the other side might be like.

To use the list, either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.

Here are some sample results:

22. Haunted House: This is a real house, one with a reputation for being haunted, and for bad things happening there over the years, including several astonishingly brutal murders. Few are able to live in the house for long and those that try are often involved, as victim or perpetrator, in a murder. To activate the gateway to the Dreaming requires a traveller stay in the house overnight, in one specific bedroom. This bedroom is easy to determine, as it’s the one where most bad things have happened. The traveller must remain in bed, no matter what they hear, and in the morning when they open the bedroom door it can open onto a trod. The trod takes the form of a corridor though an abandoned and rundown house, with open doors leading off it. Things can be seen moving out of the corner of the eye and sounds can be heard. Travellers are warned not to enter any of the open rooms.

23. Helter-skelter: A permanent helter-skelter that stands in a beachside funfair, it is decorated with what can be identified as creatures of the Dreaming to those with the requisite knowledge, but to others they just appear to be fairy-related. The slide works as normal unless someone slides down on it on a specially enchanted chimerical rug. When this is done, instead of reaching the bottom, the user continues onto a trod in the Dreaming, and the slide continues along the trod for some distance. Even though the ground appears to be level, the user will continue sliding down, accompanied by the sounds of children laughing and having fun. Only there sounds to be something off about the cries of joy and laughter, which become disturbing if listened to for long enough. Occasionally, it seems there are other slides on the trod, and beings can briefly be glimpsed sliding next to the user.

24. Lefthand Twist: A pair of spiral staircases climb a tower in an old building, though they are little used these days. One of the staircases is just that, but the other, the lefthand one, can be used as a doorway to the Dreaming. Someone intending to do this must start at the bottom, then run up the stairs without slipping, then back down again, and manage this in under a minute; using the staircase normally takes several times as long and the steps are old, worn and slippery, meaning that there is a significant chance of slipping and falling. Once this is done successfully, the door at the bottom of the staircase opens to the Dreaming. The trod on the other side is made from slippery stone, here and there splashed with blood, and there are cries of people slipping and the sounds of them suffering nasty falls.
