Europe10 Hooks and Rumours for Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0.’s Europe

This list has ten hooks and rumours that can be heard about Greece. Whether or not they are true is up to the GameMaster. They can be used as background colour or as potential adventure hooks.

  1. Athens has expanded so that now a third of the population of Greece live within the city. This was done without anything resembling a plan, and there are rumours that the infrastructure of the city is on the verge of collapsing as a result, and that any significant problem will soon spiral out of control.
  2. Europa Sur has a strong presence in Greece, but there are also hundreds of small-time operations. It’s rumoured, though, that Europa Sur has been eying up these smaller operations, with the intent of taking over the most profitable, or potentially profitable, whether or not the current owners agree.
  3. Greece is a useful back door into Europe for those of less than entirely honest motives, thanks to the level of corruption. It’s rumoured that Interpol has been trying to do something about this, given that Greece is essentially a conduit for criminals, but given many of the police are basically criminals with a badge, this is not getting very far.
  4. Greece maybe a police state, but the police are eminently bribable and rarely bother foreigners anyway. However, some police have reputedly decided that rich tourists are an ideal way of supplementing their income, by bringing them in on small charges and then suggesting a minor, promptly-paid “fine” will smooth everything over.
  5. Greece’s exiled parliament, or at least the thirty-odd survivors of it, works from Rhodes where they are unable to call elections but still gain support from various places, from partisan movements to non-European countries who want the turmoil to continue. It’s rumoured that there’s a plan in place to finally eradicate the last parliamentarians, to help bring order and stop outside interference.
  6. Interpol knows that Greece is a backdoor into Europe, and it’s rumoured that, as well as checking anyone coming from the country more carefully, they have contacts, and sometimes agents, within various smuggling and smuggling-related operations within the country.
  7. Rhodes is a now-independent island where the democratic remnants of Greece fled, though now it’s a lawless place. The St. John Knights are trying to clear the island of crime, and Europa Sur has its headquarters there. It’s rumoured that both sides have outside funding, perhaps some coming from Greece itself, seeking to destroy the island’s independence.
  8. The Aegean Sea is full of too many islands for the government of Greece to control them all, and they are popular with smugglers as a result. It’s rumoured that there are secret bases on some of the islands, with some said to date back to the Cold War or even earlier, hidden homes that subs can use.
  9. The army is officially in control of Greece, but the countryside is effectively under partisan control. The army can only move along heavily-patrolled highways, though it’s rumoured that recently some partisans have got their hands on advanced weaponry allowing them to attack those highways.
  10. The war in Macedonia is so far just skirmishes, as the EC won’t help Greece outside the country’s borders and the Serbs have proved reluctant to directly attack an EC member. It’s rumoured that a shadow war is getting even more dangerous, as solos and other mercenaries attack targets on each side.
