D10: Features for Starports

Starports can have features or customs that set them apart from each other. Here are ten such features to make such places more individualistic. Most will work for both space- and land-based ports.

  1. High levels of radiation exist in the area around the port, and it’s more heavily shielded as a result.
  2. No face-to-face business-related meetings between different parties ever occur at the port; all such are done through the use of a guild of intermediaries.
  3. Spies are very common at the port, working for various organisations, from businesses to governments, and information is a valuable commodity, often sold, sometimes stolen.
  4. The port has cutting edge technology, and on occasion this technology proves to have been inadequately tested before being deployed.
  5. The port is just the latest one to be constructed where it is; all the prior ports have suffered from various incidents that led to their destruction.
  6. The port is popular with pilgrims, as it’s positioned on a route regularly used by those of a particular religion on a pilgrimage.
  7. The port is very, very old and existed long before it was found. It was apparently constructed by a precursor species, and was still mostly functioning when discovered.
  8. The port is very wealthy, and so are the owners of it. The port itself is an independent business entity, but it’s generating so much cash that it’s buying up other businesses.
  9. The port’s defences are currently malfunctioning, and any ship approaching risks being fired upon by the defensive systems.
  10. Vast warehouses and storage areas take up a goodly amount of the port’s area, as it’s commonly used as both a transshipment area and a storage one.
