Numenera is a game published by Monte Cook Games. Its setting is the Ninth World, and this list has ten rumours for that setting. The rumours, which are similar to the Hearsay that can be found in the official books, can be used as adventure hooks or as simple misinformation.

  1. It’s rumoured that the city of Joria, which is built on an enormous crustacean, is home to a people who steals what they need from others, using the constantly moving nature of their home as a way of evading trouble from those who object to their practices.
  2. Joria is a city built on the back of an enormous crustacean known as a granthu. It’s rumoured that some outside forces have taken an interest in the city, believing it would make a useful base of operations for piracy in the area.
  3. Joria’s granthu is an enormous creature, and there’s little that can truly threaten a crustacean of its size. It’s rumoured, though, that there are certain parts of the depths that the being steers clear of, and that certain sounds, when heard underwater, cause it to be disturbed, leading to beliefs that there may indeed be something vast enough to potentially prey on the granthu.
  4. Jorians are best suited for living in the Deep Dark, but they are highly adaptable and can survive in many surroundings. It’s said that this adaptability makes Jorians in high demand in certain jobs, at least for those of their kind who are willing to leave their home.
  5. Many Jorians expire follow their second return to the Shallows, as the transition to the depths is more difficult the second time. This is despite how long it’s possible for their kind to live, and it’s rumoured that they would be willing to pay for some kind of cure.
  6. Reputedly, the blue mazars of Joria have amassed extensive records of the areas of the ocean that their city travels through. It’s said that in these records are details on many shipwrecks, ruins and lost treasures that others would pay highly for.
  7. Shyphe, the current Warholder, is half of the elected couple who leads Joria. She’s a human, rather than a Jorian, who was rescued as a child from a boating accident and brought to the city. It’s rumoured that Shyphe would still like to find out if she has any family elsewhere.
  8. The granthu on which the city of Joria is built on and in is the only known example of its kind. It’s said that the Jorians would pay dearly to know about the locations of any others of the creature, and that this has made them vulnerable to the unethical in the past.
  9. The Jorians are adept at moving in the water, and this ability has made them appealing to those who make a living on, or beneath, the waves. It’s said that more than a few parties, some less honest than others, have been trying to get Jorians to join them, and some of the less honest are considering using force in order to compel assistance.
  10. The Jorians have the ability to repair the building structures on the granthu on which their city is built, but not the ability to build new ones. This has led to rumours about just who originally built them, and whether the granthu is itself a manufactured creature made by the city’s original builders.
