100 Fantasy Battle Cries (And Their Histories)

100 Fantasy Battle Cries (And Their Histories)Battle cries are used to inspire troops and to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy. This supplement has 100 different battle cries that could be heard, together with the histories of how they came to be.

The battle cries are varied, with different origins, and some are simply sounds rather than words. They can be used to enliven up a battle or add colour to a military force.

To use the list, either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.

Here are some sample results:

44. “Refuse”: War is not about killing your enemy; it is about preventing them. If you stop them from advancing, do not allow them to rest and ensure their strikes do you little harm, then their force will break against you like a wave against a rock. No matter how mighty a foe might appear, if you deny them momentum, their effort will grind to a halt. This wisdom, taken from the Book of War, is a favorite cry from those who find themselves surrounded, or under siege.

45. “Do Your Worst”: A command issued at the top of his voice from Captain Coldwell, this battle cry belongs to the 22nd irregulars, commonly referred to as the Bad Company. Made up of convicts who signed up only to beat the rope, or to avoid a lifetime of hard labor, the company boasts leg breakers, brawlers, cutthroats, brigands, pirates and a dozen different stripes of killers. Rather than trying to redeem these troops, though, Coldwell simply put them to use as the ugly, jagged tools they were. While the company has never been orderly, clean, or respectful, there’s no denying they get the job done with brutal efficiency.

46. “Cleanse the Blight”: A cry adopted by followers of the warrior priest Hadin Thorne; it was first used to steel the nerves of the ranks who stood against the dead legions bound to the service of the dread necromancer Nathalias during the Black Blight Wars. Though the undead were eventually defeated, many warriors still use this cry when facing living enemies. Such an action is considered blasphemy by many in the faith, however, as life is sacred; relegating one’s enemies to the status of an abomination is a perversion of the doctrine these soldiers claim to uphold. Despite that, the use of this cry persists, and worryingly to some, grows more common.
