100 Fantasy Tattoos (And the Meaning Behind Them)

100 Fantasy Tattoos (And the Meaning Behind Them)Tattoos are often used for more than merely decorative purposes. They can be used to convoy meaning and associations.

This supplement has 100 different tattoos suitable for a fantasy setting. Some are marks of accomplishment whilst others can denote membership in organisations. They can be used to enhance NPCs, as a way of identifying people from groups or be something that characters aim to obtain.

To use the list, either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.

Here are some sample results:

66. Fylgan Sott: In the far north there is a belief that when one is born, they are connected to a spirit creature. Most often this creature takes the form of an animal that is present at the person’s birth, or which appears mysteriously during their childhood. Some children can even see these familiar spirits, even though most adults cannot, assuming the little ones are merely interacting with imaginary friends. The Fylgan Sott (or “familiar seat” as it is commonly translated) is tattooed on one’s shoulder, and it acts as a perch for this spirit to rest on. Many believe the tattoo allows the familiar to whisper to them, offering sage counsel and warnings of danger.

67. The Gravedigger: The lowest roll in the game of Cups, the Gravedigger is said to mark the end of one’s fortunes. However, as many gamblers say, if you’ve rolled all five dice and they came up a single pip, there’s nowhere you can go but up! A common version of this tattoo is to put a single black dot on each knuckle of one hand, but illustrations of the five dice along the forearm or stacked on the shoulder are far from unheard of. What’s unusual is that, rather than drawing bad luck, the mark is said to ward away misfortune… by most dicers, anyway.

68. Old Man’s Vanity: When a man loses his hair too often it’s assumed that he’s also lost his strength, his virility and his wits. While some men will shave their heads in defiance of their age, and others will wear covering hair pieces, some will have their scalps tattooed with false stubble. This creates an air of ruggedness, and camouflage’s the worst of time’s theft, though it may lead to one being ridiculed should the illusion be broken and the truth of the tattoo revealed.
