100 Witches, Wizards, and Warlocks

100 Witches, Wizards, and Warlocks

100 Witches, Wizards, and WarlocksMagic takes many forms, as do those who practice the arcane arts. There are many terms for those who wield these powers, and they come in an infinite variety of forms. While most who think of spellcasters picture isolated crones in the deep woods, or traveling graybeards with mystical-sounding names, it’s not always possible to tell a practitioner just by sight. Many of them, though, are impossible to ignore… but even if one can feel the supernatural aura of a spellcaster’s power, only the learned and experienced can parse what kind of magic they use, and how they achieved their skills.

Though witches, wizards and warlocks are often specific classes in fantasy RPGs, the following entries are meant to be a starting place for creating a memorable NPC. Game Masters are encouraged to use creative license with the following descriptions in order to stretch them over the mechanics that make them most effective for the game or edition you happen to be playing. Game Masters are also encouraged to make these characters as strong as is necessary for them to fulfill their role in the story.

To use the list, either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.

Here are some sample results:

37. Fang: Elves are often thought of as elegant, haughty and aloof… but none of these things describe Fang in the least. Lean and ropy, with filed teeth and predatory eyes, Fang has a wild mane of hair, and he’s wrapped in the pelts and skins of the great beasts he’s slain with his own two hands. A part of nature, rather than someone who is attempting to hold themselves above it, the savage spellcaster is rarely sought out due to his extremely unpredictable nature. Those who find themselves desperate enough, though, may sound the call of the wild and roll the die to see if he’ll come to their aid.

38. Aedara: A hermit living atop the Mercy Spire, Aedara’s screams can sometimes be heard ringing from the mountain peaks. A young woman with staring eyes, and hair that’s gone white from the things she’s seen, the name of the thing that empowers her, and which taught her magic, is not known to most. Those who listen carefully, though, will hear her mutter about the thousand staring eyes of the sky, and about things that have been, things that are and things that will be, all of them poured into her mind before they tumble off her tongue. Those willing to risk their sanity in order to find answers can ascend the stairs to crumbling temple she calls home, and sit with her beneath the staring moon. But while they will see, they will also be seen… and that prospect is one that scares off all but the truly determined who might call upon her.

39. Corrigan Gelder: A young dwarf with sandy hair and a curly beard, Corrigan was sent to complete an arcane education by his mother. He found himself drawn to the transmuter’s arts, and once he completed his education, he returned to his family’s clan hold with all the skills he’d had drilled into him. With his ability to mend damages to mining equipment with a wave of his hand, and to cleave through stone with a single word of power, Corrigan’s magic has proven quite a boon to his family’s digging operations. While there are people who think this is a base use of such power, Corrigan takes great pride in increasing his family’s yields and earnings while reducing accidents among their workers to practically nothing.
