100 Foods to Find in a Dungeon

100 Foods to Find in a DungeonJust as in the surface realms, creatures in dungeons need to eat too. If these creatures are intelligent, they will also prepare food in different ways. This supplement has 100 different dishes that could be found in the underearth realms.

The foods are made with a variety of underground ingredients and creatures and range from the comparatively normal to the bizarre to the repugnant to the toxic. Characters could find them being eaten or, in larger areas, for sale.

To use the list either roll d100 for a random result or select appropriate ones manually.

Here are some sample results:

62. Pickled Cave Barnacles: Not true barnacles, these related molluscs grow on the walls of damp dungeons. Inside a hard, sharp shell lies the tough, chewy meat, and cooking the barnacles only makes the meat harder to eat. The barnacles are pried off the walls and shucked out of their shells, then pickled in jars of vinegar which are then sealed for several months. The pickling softens the tough flesh of the barnacles and makes them more palatable, although few would call them a delicacy.

63. Rat Balls: Not made from the meat of rats but just their tails. The tails are severed, boiled and fashioned into small balls by rolling them together in a stock made from boiled mushroom. The balls are cooled and allowed to set. They come in different sizes, from a single mouthful for a human-sized creature to large balls that can be carved and served.

64. Rat Head Soup: Similar to some surface soups, this is a way of using parts of a carcass that would normally be discarded, although rat is hardly a popular choice of surface food. The heads come from normal rats, which are severed and gently simmered in a container of seasoned water for several hours, until the flesh comes from the bones and the bones themselves become soft. The thickened soup is then poured into bowls and served; the remains of the heads are eaten with the soup, rather than strained out of it.
